What Is My Zodiac Sign?

Your zodiac sign is the constellation the Sun was passing through on the day you were born. Astrologers call this your Sun sign - the most visible layer of your astrological identity, the energy you radiate, and the core of how you approach life.

When someone asks “what is your sign?” they mean your Sun sign. It is determined entirely by your birth date. No birth time or location required.

According to a 2022 YouGov survey, 27% of American adults say they believe in astrology - and the zodiac sign question is typically the first stop.

To find your exact sign: Use the date table below to look up your birthday. For your Sun sign alongside your Moon sign, Rising sign, and house placements, the Sidera birth chart calculator does the full calculation instantly.

Find Your Zodiac Sign by Birthday

In the tropical zodiac - the system used by Western astrology - the Sun moves through all twelve signs each year. Your sign is determined by which of those twelve the Sun occupied on your birthday.

Born near a date boundary? The Sun moves into each new sign at a precise moment each year - not exactly at midnight on the 21st or 22nd. If your birthday falls within two or three days of a sign change, you are on the cusp. Your actual sign depends on the exact time the Sun changed signs that specific year.

What If I Was Born on the Cusp?

Astrology does not recognize “cusp signs” as real placements. The Sun was in one sign or the other - never both simultaneously. Being born near the edge simply means you need a precise calculation to know which side you fall on.

This confuses many people, and the confusion is reasonable: if your birthday is April 19th and you have always read Aries horoscopes, but a chart calculator says Taurus - trust the calculator. The Sun’s exact position to the degree matters, and it shifts slightly each year based on the solar calendar.

A free birth chart tool - like the one at Sidera - calculates your exact Sun placement to the degree, removing all guesswork about cusp birthdays. It also tells you which house your Sun falls in, which is what transforms a generic sign description into something personal.

What Your Sun Sign Actually Reveals

Your Sun sign describes your core identity - but not your personality in the everyday sense. It is more fundamental than that.

Liz Greene, co-founder of the Centre for Psychological Astrology and author of multiple foundational texts on the subject, describes the Sun sign as the “essential quality of will or spirit the person has come to develop.” This is a developmental framing - you are growing toward something, not simply stamped with it at birth.

Dane Rudhyar, the father of modern humanistic astrology, made the same argument in The Astrology of Personality (1936), describing the birth chart as a “seed pattern” - not a map of fixed fate, but a blueprint for what the individual might consciously become.

This distinction matters when reading Sun sign descriptions. The Sun represents:

  • Your central purpose - What you are here to embody and develop across your lifetime
  • Your vitality - How you generate and spend energy
  • Your identity arc - The person you are growing into, not just who you are today
  • Your creative expression - How you put yourself into the world

Two people born on the same day can look very different as Suns. A Scorpio at 25 may be living the raw version - obsession, intensity, crisis-to-crisis patterns - while a Scorpio at 55 expresses the same core energy in its integrated form: depth, regeneration, mastery. The sign is the same. The person’s relationship to it evolves over a lifetime.

Sidera uses your actual birth chart—not generic horoscopes.

The Four Elements

Every zodiac sign belongs to one of four elements. Your element shapes your basic temperament:

  • Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): Energetic, action-oriented, enthusiastic, bold
  • Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): Practical, grounded, reliable, patient
  • Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): Intellectual, social, communicative, curious
  • Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): Emotional, intuitive, sensitive, depth-seeking

For a full breakdown of each element’s meaning in astrology, see the complete guide to zodiac sign elements.

The Three Modalities

Each sign also has a modality - how it engages with change:

  • Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn): Initiators. They start things, lead, and generate momentum.
  • Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius): Stabilizers. They sustain, build depth, and resist change.
  • Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces): Adapters. They transition, improvise, and synthesize.

Knowing your element and modality adds immediate texture to your Sun sign. A fixed fire sign (Leo) behaves very differently from a mutable fire sign (Sagittarius), even though both are energetic and outwardly expressive.

Tropical vs Sidereal: Are You in a Different Sign?

The twelve-sign zodiac dates to at least 700 BCE in Babylonian astronomy and was systematized for Western use by the Greek-Egyptian astronomer Claudius Ptolemy in his 2nd-century CE work Tetrabiblos. It has anchored the zodiac to the seasons ever since.

Tropical astrology (Western) holds Aries always beginning at the March equinox. This is the system behind the date table above.

Sidereal astrology (used in Vedic/Jyotish) anchors the zodiac to the actual positions of the star constellations. Due to a slow wobble in Earth’s axis called axial precession - a cycle that takes approximately 25,772 years to complete - the sidereal zodiac has drifted roughly 24 degrees behind the tropical zodiac over the past two millennia. That is about one degree every 72 years, or approximately 23-24 days on the calendar.

The result: sidereal dates run about 23-24 days later than tropical dates.

AriesMar 21 - Apr 19Apr 14 - May 14
TaurusApr 20 - May 20May 15 - Jun 14
GeminiMay 21 - Jun 20Jun 15 - Jul 15
CancerJun 21 - Jul 22Jul 16 - Aug 15
LeoJul 23 - Aug 22Aug 16 - Sep 15
VirgoAug 23 - Sep 22Sep 16 - Oct 15
LibraSep 23 - Oct 22Oct 16 - Nov 14

CapricornDec 22 - Jan 19Jan 14 - Feb 12
AquariusJan 20 - Feb 18Feb 13 - Mar 13
PiscesFeb 19 - Mar 20Mar 14 - Apr 13

Neither system is wrong. They answer different questions. Tropical astrology maps your seasonal, psychological evolution. Sidereal astrology maps your relationship to the actual star field. Most astrology in the English-speaking world uses tropical dates - so if you grew up reading horoscopes in a magazine or newspaper, your sign in that tradition is your tropical Sun sign.

Your Sun Sign Is One Piece of a Larger Chart

Your Sun sign is the most recognizable astrological placement - but your full chart reveals far more:

  • Moon sign: Your emotional patterns, inner life, what you need to feel safe. The Moon changes signs every 2.5 days, making it the most variable piece of the chart.
  • Rising sign (Ascendant): How others see you, your outer presentation, the lens through which your entire chart operates. This requires your exact birth time and location.
  • Planetary placements: Where Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and the other planets fall shapes specific areas of your life - love, drive, expansion, lessons.
  • Houses: The twelve houses divide your chart into life domains (identity, money, communication, home, creativity, health, relationships, and more). A planet in a house shows where that planet’s energy expresses. See the complete guide to the 12 astrology houses.
  • Aspects: The geometric relationships between planets (conjunctions, squares, trines, oppositions) show how different parts of your chart work together or create friction.

Two people born on the same day can have completely different charts if born in different cities at different times - different Moon signs, different Rising signs, different house placements for every planet. Learn more about how your Sun, Moon, and Rising signs work together and what a complete birth chart reading reveals. You can also explore zodiac sign compatibility to see how your sign interacts with others.

Your Sun sign names the story. Your full chart tells it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is my zodiac sign if I was born on the cusp?

There are no official “cusp signs” in astrology. The Sun was in one sign on your birthday - not between two. If you were born near a sign-change date, the only way to know your actual Sun sign is to calculate the exact moment the Sun transited that year. A free birth chart calculator does this instantly.

Can I have two zodiac signs?

No. Your Sun sign is fixed by the Sun’s position at your birth - one sign, one degree. You may relate to a neighboring sign’s traits if you have other planets (Moon, Rising, Mercury) placed there, which is common and worth exploring in a full chart.

What is the difference between my Sun sign and my Moon sign?

Your Sun sign reflects your core identity, creative will, and life purpose. Your Moon sign reflects your emotional nature, instinctive responses, and what you need to feel secure. The Moon moves through all twelve signs in approximately 28 days, so your Moon sign is entirely separate from your Sun sign. See the full guide to Sun, Moon, and Rising signs.

How do I find my Rising sign?

Your Rising sign (Ascendant) is the zodiac sign that was on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of your birth. It requires your birth time and birth location - not just your birthday. A birth chart calculator that inputs all three will give you your Rising sign instantly.

Am I a different zodiac sign in sidereal astrology?

Possibly. Because the sidereal zodiac runs approximately 23-24 days behind the tropical zodiac, many people find their Sun falls in the preceding sign when using a sidereal calculator. Whether this matters depends on which tradition you are working with. Western astrology uses tropical; Vedic/Jyotish uses sidereal.

Does my zodiac sign change over time?

Your Sun sign does not change. The Sun is in the same position relative to the tropical zodiac every year on your birthday. However, Earth’s axial precession does cause a slow drift between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs over centuries - so your sidereal position is different from that of someone born 2,000 years ago with the same birthday.

What zodiac sign is most common?

Based on US birth statistics, Scorpio (October-November) and Virgo (August-September) tend to appear most frequently, reflecting higher birth rates in those months. The difference is small - the Sun spends approximately 30 days in each sign per year.

Calculate Your Full Birth Chart

Once you know your Sun sign, the full birth chart is the complete picture - Sun, Moon, Rising, planetary placements, and house positions together. This is where astrology becomes personal rather than generic.

The Sidera app calculates your complete chart instantly using your birth date, time, and location. It shows not just which signs your planets fall in, but which house they occupy and what aspects they form with each other - the three-dimensional map that makes your chart uniquely yours.
